FAQs
Here are some common questions that our team gets asked about earthwork in general and our services specifically.
Basically, earthwork is the strategic placement of earth and materials to construct a usable product. This can include building new earthwork structures or improving/maintaining existing ones. Such excavation, leveling, and placement of earth could include:
- Building / Maintaining earth foundations, roads, or ponds and other waterways
- Reclaiming areas that once had a structure on it to natural ground elevation and habitat
- Extracting natural resources

Cenizo utilizes advanced technology to ensure efficiency and quality in our work. We possess an in-house 4D modeling system to create detailed, precise models of projects which can be converted to machine control in our equipment through GPS systems. Such technology sets us apart from many other contractors as many of our competitors outsource their 4D modeling or do not use GPS systems in their equipment at all. More information on how our technology works can be found on our Technology page here.
Production per hour or day depends upon the job. We have to evaluate what type of equipment is necessary, what type of material is necessary, and any factors that may affect production. For example, if we are mulching, we need to consider the thickness and size of the brush/trees. If we are excavating, we need to consider how deep we have to dig, how hard the material being excavated is, etc. The location of the project also has bearing on production. If our team must travel a long distance to arrive at the project, that will take away some time in the day for production. Once we gather all this information, we are then able to provide an estimated hourly or daily production rate.
When we are able to start your project depends upon factors specific to the current time such as workload and weather. Sometimes we are able to start a new project immediately or within a couple days, whereas other times it could be a couple weeks before we are able to begin.
- Contact 811.
- Walk/Sweep the site for any unforeseen obstacles (such as underground utilities).
- Complete pre-job walk with customer.
- Perform layout/stakeout survey.
- Mobilize equipment to site.
- Begin executing scope of work.
Our estimated timeline for completion of your project will be provided to you at the beginning of your project and will be based upon the scope of that exact project. Factors that could affect the estimated timeline could be weather, unusually hard or rocky ground, and the availability of subcontractors such as those providing trucking, materials, paving, fencing, etc.
Before earthwork begins, you will perform a pre-job walk with a Cenizo representative. You will also need to identify any items that may need to be removed from the area (such as old water troughs, fencing, etc.) or that we should be aware of in the area. Depending on the situation, livestock or other animals may need to be moved.
